Amazon Macie
- What it is
- Data security service that uses machine learning and pattern matching to discover and protect sensitive data in Amazon S3.
- What it finds
- Personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), financial data, credentials, and API keys.
- Also flags buckets that are public, unencrypted, or shared with external accounts.
- Why it matters
- GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI DSS obligations require knowing where regulated data lives.
- Not to be confused with
- Amazon GuardDuty — threat detection from logs, not data classification.
- Amazon Inspector — software vulnerabilities in workloads.
- Exam signal
- “Discover PII”, “sensitive data in S3”, “data privacy compliance” → Macie.
