S3 Glacier Deep Archive

    • The cheapest storage in AWS. The bottom of the Amazon S3 Glacier family — the digital equivalent of off-site tape.
  • Numbers
    • 11 nines durability, multi-AZ. Minimum billable storage duration 180 days.
    • Retrieval: Standard 12 hours, Bulk up to 48 hours.
  • When to use it
    • Regulatory retention of 7–10 years: financial records, healthcare data, legal holds — data kept because it must be, not because it will be read.
    • The replacement story for physical tape libraries, often fed by Tape Gateway.

    • Vault Lock enforces write-once-read-many (WORM) retention that can be locked permanently.
