consolidated billing
- What it is
- A feature of AWS Organizations that combines the billing of all member accounts into a single invoice paid by the management (payer) account.
- Free.
- The financial benefits
- Volume discounts pool (or volume pricing qualification) — combined usage across all accounts reaches higher tiered-pricing brackets (S3 storage, data transfer).
- Reserved Instances and Savings Plans are shared — unused commitment purchased in one account automatically applies to matching usage in any other account.
- One payment, one place to see total spend.
- What it does not do
- It does not merge the accounts. Each account remains an isolated security and resource boundary.
- Costs remain visible per account, so chargeback still works — especially with cost allocation tags.
- Control note
- Sharing of RI/Savings Plans discounts can be turned off per account if a team must be billed strictly on its own purchases.
